Urgent! Please write in to the county and commission to support!

Today we write to urge you to write, by 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 16th to, both the Planning Commission and the Board of County Commissioners:

Change the Critical Areas Ordinance to protect Big Lake, and all other critical areas, from stormwater pollution and other off-site impacts of ALL new development, not just projects within 200’ of the lake.  Maintain the Big Lake Rural Village Special Provisions adopted in 2007.

Both boards are meeting next week, schedule and e-mail addresses below.  Please also consider attending the meeting, in person or by zoom.

We’ve appeared on this issue before both the Board of County Commissioners and the Planning Commission to tell them how the 200’ limitation on review for off-site impacts on critical areas from new development fails to protect critical areas.  Friends of Skagit County and others objected when the staff removed the Big Lake Special Provisions for Overlook Crest from the proposed draft.  Regarding 200’ issue:  PowerPoint Presentation and written comments attached.

Commissioners know the problem, but the staff and review consultant appear to have ignored our comments. Usually developers would not want the Code changes.  Please remember, because the Overlook Crest Project is 800+ feet from Big Lake instead of only 200 feet, the Planning Department did not require a critical area site assessment for stormwater pollution impacts on Big Lake.

Time is of the essence:  Please let both Boards know where you stand – it is important to Big Lake’s future to drop the 200’ limitation on critical area review and maintain the Big Lake Special Provisions.   CAPITALIZED

Sorry for the short notice and thanks for helping Protect Big Lake!
